GPS and telematics use cases in real-world operations

These scenarios show how to combine technologies to meet specific needs. The final setup depends on the vehicle, your objectives and technical compatibility.

Cutting unproductive kilometres

Situation: little visibility of routes and repeated journeys.

Solution: route history, zones, stop analysis and planning.

Indicator: kilometres per job or delivery.

Automating downloads

Solution: compatible equipment and remote scheduling.

Indicator: downloads completed and pending.

Cross-checking fuel use

Situation: consumption that is hard to link to actual operations.

Solution: CAN bus/FMS data or sensors plus activity analysis.

Indicator: consumption per vehicle, route or period.

Monitoring machinery

Situation: assets spread across sites and hours of use unknown.

Solution: GPS, engine hours, geofences and alerts.

Indicator: utilisation and downtime.

Coordinating field assistance

Situation: jobs assigned manually with no view of who is nearby.

Solution: fleet map and customer zones.

Indicator: time to arrival.

Protecting mobile assets

Situation: trailers or containers with no power supply.

Solution: self-powered devices and optimised communications.

Indicator: last known position and movement events.

How to measure a telematics project

Before rolling out, it is worth setting a baseline and choosing a small number of relevant indicators: kilometres, engine time, fuel consumption, visits, deliveries, downtime, downloads or incidents. The results are then compared with the previous period.
