Glossary of telematics, GPS and fleet management
CANBUS
The vehicle's internal communication network, which allows data to be exchanged between electronic units. With a compatible interface it can feed technical data into the telematics platform.
FMS
A standardised interface used mainly in commercial vehicles to make certain fleet data easier to access.
Geofence
A virtual zone defined on the map that can trigger events when a vehicle enters it, leaves it or stays inside it.
GPS
The global satellite navigation system used to calculate the position of the device.
GPRS / mobile data
The connectivity the tracker uses to send positions and events to the platform.
Telematics
The combination of telecommunications, sensors, positioning and software used to collect and analyse information from vehicles and assets.
Idling
A period in which the engine is running while the vehicle remains stationary.
Odometer
The vehicle's mileage reading; it may come from the dashboard, CAN bus, FMS, or be calculated by GPS depending on the solution.
Fuel sensor
A device or data source used to determine or estimate the fuel level and how it changes.
API
An interface that allows data to be exchanged between Vigilo and other software systems.
IoT
Internet of Things: connected devices that collect and transmit data from vehicles, machinery or assets.
